Our story is one laced with Family Legacy. River Creek Ranch is family owned and family managed. In 1998, Tom and Peggy Johnson purchased the Ranch with family in mind. A place of solitude, retreat, and adventure where our family creates memories that last a lifetime. It is a place where we are teaching our family and others stewardship and responsibility. Shortly after acquiring the Ranch, we set out on a quest to find a Ranch Manager that shared our same set of values. This search led us to Wayland Moore and the Moore family. Wayland is an experienced ranch manager and cattleman, with decades of experience. Today, Wayland’s son, Eric serves as the Herd Manager, where he works closely with Ryan Johnson, Tom’s son, for continued expansion of the Ranch and Herd. Our family and the Moore family are committed to family, stewardship of our assets, and to raising our cattle with integrity. Over the last twenty years, it seems things have come full circle and we are excited to see what is in the works for the next generation to continue our family legacy.
River Creek Ranch breeds and raises quality Wagyu and Black Angus cattle. We are intentional with the raising of our herd. We take a 360-degree approach to ranching. From the grass they are fed, the water they drink, and the conditions where they live, we supply our herd with the very best. We are believers in frequent rotational grazing. This allows our herd and pastures to maintain optimum health and nutrition. We are stewards of our land. You will find us constantly improving our infrastructure on the Ranch through clearing, prescribed burning, building fences and ponds, and installing irrigation systems.
Our current herd consists of full-blood Wagyu, Wagyu/Angus, and Black Angus cattle. In growing and managing our herd, we start with quality. No exceptions. Quality genetics is the foundation of our Wagyu cattle. Our approach is quality over quantity. We raise our cattle with integrity by providing them with a healthy, humane and sustainable environment. Our herd is part of our family. We interact daily with our cattle, which provides for gentle, calm, and easy to work cattle. People who interact with our cows, frequently comment on how our herd’s temperament is calm and gentle. This speaks to the quality of our management by Wayland and Eric and their Ranch Hands. We allow our herd to roam the Ranch in rotational pastures and they are not confined to feeding pens. The holistic approach that we take in raising our cattle, allows us to consistently market our Wagyu and Wagyu/Angus cross cattle as high-quality feeder calves and fattened cattle ready for harvest. The result: craft beef that is Texas born and Texas raised, free of antibiotics and growth hormones.
River Creek comprises over 1,800 acres in Central Texas near the Regency Bridge in San Saba County. The Ranch lies on the northern edge of the Edward’s Plateau in the Texas Hill County, where the landscape and terrain is Texas through and through. From Mesquite patches to Cedar thickets, to stands of Live Oak trees and boulders; vistas allowing you to see for miles to bottom land of the Colorado River Basin; and crop fields that yield quality hay and forage. We truly have it all. You cannot forget the stars! Nights on the ranch are an amazing thing to behold. The stars at night are definitely big and bright at River Creek Ranch. The Ranch is also home to an abundance of native Texas wildlife, such as free range white-tailed deer, turkey, dove, quail, and waterfowl. Wild hogs are also present on the Ranch, which provides a year-round sporting opportunity to prevent destruction in our pastures. The headquarters of our family office, which oversees the Ranch, is located in Sherman, Texas, near the Red River. We are proud members of the American Wagyu Association, Texas Wagyu Association, and Texas Southwest Cattle Raisers Association.
